30th Anniversary Saturday June 9, 2018
2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the bylaw establishing the Green Timbers Urban Forest (and Sunnyside Acres too). It’s also the Surrey Nature Centre’s 10th anniversary.
We marked the occasion with walking tours and partnering with the SNAP team and the Surrey Nature Centre. The day was beautiful and about a hundred or so people dropped by to say hi or take a cupcake.
The SNAP program (Surrey Natural Areas Partnership) is off and running. This year there are 14 people funded through Canada Summer Jobs grants. They are divided into three teams: habitat restoration, community outreach and a boulevard tree program.
Our plan to update the 1998 Nature Guide is under way. Thanks Allison for volunteering!
Please don’t forage for food in the forest
We received the following notice from Bree Greve, Stewardship Programs Coordinator, from the City of Surrey:
As a partner in environmental stewardship education, we value your support in promoting messages that benefit our natural areas. We’ve noticed an uptick in reports of people harvesting vegetation in our parks – most recently in Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest.
Could you please help us get a reminder out that the harvesting of vegetation in Surrey parks is prohibited by bylaw 13480, including:
· Berries
· Conks
· Mushrooms
· Fiddleheads
· Moss
Removing vegetation reduces food sources for native wildlife, and walking off trail to harvest can also lead to soil compaction, trampling of vegetation, and erosion in our sensitive urban natural areas.
We appreciate your continued partnership and support in circulating this message. Please report any incidents of people harvesting vegetation from Surrey parks to 604-501-5050.
Thank you,
BREE GREVE | STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

OUR VIEW: SNAP is a community group that’s good to grow (May 20, 2018)
Surrey’s Natural Area Partnership protects the city’s natural environment
When it comes to editorials, this one’s a SNAP.
Surrey’s Natural Area Partnership (SNAP), was formed 18 years ago with the aim of protecting the city’s natural environment. Like its name suggests, it’s a partnership between the Green Timbers Heritage Society, the City of Surrey’s Parks Division, White Rock and Surrey Naturalists and the Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society.

OPINION: SkyTrain-LRT debate only over for one leg (May 10, 2018)
Surrey residents find out transit costs have been bumped dramatically
…One critic says the LRT plan should be cancelled entirely, and a SkyTrain system built instead.
While this won’t happen with the first phase, on which a great deal of planning has been done, that point is worth considering with the second phase – the line along Fraser Highway from King George Boulevard to Langley City. The SkyTrain guideway already extends past King George Station – pointing down Fraser Highway. SkyTrain would have less impact on Green Timbers forest, and the line will need to be elevated in some places anyway – notably in Langley City where it crosses Highway 10.
